Russell Holbrook is from a good Baptist home, a traditional nuclear family, where he was raised with love and given every opportunity that a healthy young man could hope for. But the chemicals in his brain didn't quite mix and flow the way they were supposed to. By the time he was twenty-one years old, in the summer of 1997, his inner and outer life were spiraling downward in a vortex of depression, alienation, addiction, and reckless behavior. He needed help. He needed hope. He needed an answer. And then he found it, only it wasn't what he assumed it to be.

This is the true life story of how a happy-go-lucky, beer-swilling, pot-smoking Christian rocker sought to destroy his life, how he succeeded, how he failed, and where he is now.

Heroin is the Answer A Memoir of What I Can Remember edition by Russell Holbrook Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • Mr. Holbrook opens his heart and humbles himself to reveal and honest, real, and raw account of his experience. I often wondered why and how many of my friends could, did, and remained down a path similar to Russell's. His writing is well done, using sensory language at times to pull us into what he was feeling and thinking and seeing at particular moments. He also reveals his motivations and trains of thought in precise language that shows his process. Although sad and poignant, it is well worth the read to gain insight, understanding, or simply just to empathize with those who went through something similar. Thanks for sharing Russell.
  • Holbrook seemingly does not spare himself nor the reader any of the details he recalls. He takes us on a painful journey that we go on willingly because of his relatable humanity. Holbrook's writing is accessible and aptly describes the torturous cycle of addiction. As someone in recovery, I recommend this to anyone who struggles with drug and alcohol abuse and perhaps more importantly, to those who do not.
  • Heroin is the Answer is a captivating, heartbreaking, and relatable memoir. The author paints such a vivid picture of addiction, loss, apathy, depression, and growth, that you can't help but live it yourself for a brief time.
  • Heroin is the Answer is heartbreaking and honest story of an abusive relationships with an addiction to drugs and depression and the lies we all tell ourselves daily to justify our actions. Russell Holbrook does not shy away from the incriminating details and opens his heart to us with his insightful poetry.
  • Sometimes we forget what others are going through in life and having people strong enough to finally fight for something better is an amazing gift. It helps at times to try and understand the mindset of addiction. This book reminds me to remember others perception and to try and have an open mind to helping others. Thanks! So proud of you
  • This book is a very brutal look at depression, addiction, family, friends, and faith. The author’s own recollection of fumbling through life via his habits, in words that flowed beautifully and cut deeply when they needed to. We may not need another reminder of how addiction destroys lives, but this is a very welcome addition to that library regardless. I read this book in one sitting. Maybe you will too.
  • Wow what did I just read!?! Loved it. Thanks for sharing your story. Very powerful and relatable at times too
  • This is the story of how an addiction grabs hold of a good person. The author takes us down his path and is courageously honest about the depression, self doubt and negative self talk that led him to try and stop the pain. If you are touched by addiction in any way, there is value in this book for you.
