- Justinian respected learning and scholarship so many intellectuals in Constantinople took the opportunity to ingratiate themselves by composing histories. Menander was one of these. His history doesn't survive except in fragments in the Suda and excerpts in the collection of Constantine Porphoryogennitos. The fragments make me sad that Menander's History is not complete as he comes across as interesting with lots of insightful observations.
The surviving fragments are fairly substantial. The edition and translation is excellent. This book makes a good edition to my collection of Byzantine sources.
